About Us
Born in Argentina in 1949, Marcelo Kuperschmit, MD, FACS,
emigrated to the United States in 1976 to become a surgeon. He pioneered
a minimally invasive hernia procedure that reduces post-operative pain,
leaves almost invisible scars, and allows patients to return soon to
active lives. Dr. Kuperschmit has performed over 1,000 of these
laparoscopic extra-peritoneal hernia surgeries.
Dr. Kuperschmit earned his MD at the University of Buenos Aires
School of Medicine in 1972, following it with a residency in general
surgery at the university’s Fernández Hospital. Later he took a position
at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., first as a
fellow in cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Kuperschmit transitioned to
general surgery as a resident and chief resident, finally becoming a
clinical instructor in 1981, a position he holds today. Marcelo
Kuperschmit is also affiliated with Metropolitan Surgical Associates in
Arlington, Virginia. He served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery
at Virginia Hospital Center from 1998 to 2005.
Dr. Kuperschmit performs a technique that uses the laparoscope, a
small video camera that can be inserted into the body where a surgeon
needs to operate. The smallness of the necessary incision greatly
reduces the pain the patient feels later. Through this opening, Dr.
Kuperschmit uses special instruments to remove whatever has collected in
the hernia sac. This technique allows patients to return home on the
same day and decreases the chances of recurrence. Full recovery takes
about a week.
Marcelo Kuperschmit performs other procedures in addition to hernia
repair. He specializes in minimally invasive varicose vein treatment,
specifically the VNUS closure procedure, as well as laparoscopic surgery
for the treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Kuperschmit was first board
certified in 1982, re-certified twice, and is a Fellow in the American
College of Surgeons. He is on the active staff at Arlington Hospital and
the associate staff at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church,
Virginia, and Columbia Reston Hospital in Reston, Virginia. Dr.
Kuperschmit also contributes time to the Arlington Free Clinic.
